IELTS Overview

The IELTS is a globally recognised English test. Statistics show that over 1.4 million applicants take the test each year to apply for overseas education and employment. Over 6,000 institutions in 135 countries recognise this test.

IELTS opens doors for you to more than 2000 educational institutions across 120 countries where IELTSscores are recognized as a trusted and valid indicator of ability to communicate in English. IELTS is an English Language Proficiency test that is required to be taken by non-native students for study in countries where the medium of instruction is English.

There are two types of IELTS test

General Training : The General Training module is usually taken by people who want to immigrate.

Academic : IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL). 


Fees for IELTS Academic Test is Rs. 11,300/-, payable at The British Council or Rs. 11,300/- If payable with credit card at IDP Education Australia offices throughout the country.

Score & Result Validity

It is measured in the form of “Bands”. Total score is out of 9 Bands. Scoring is between 0-9. The result is valid for 2 years.

The registration is either done in person or by mail.

Requirements for Registration

2 Photographs, Passport (not less than 6 months old) and Fee in Demand Draft or Cash (if paid in person).


If you postpone or cancel your application more than 5 weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund minus an administration charge. If you postpone or cancel within 5 weeks of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a medical reason. If you provide a medical certificate within 5 days of the test date, you will receive a refund minus the local administrative cost.

Test Mode & Repetition

The IELTS test is a paper-based test. You may take the IELTS test as many times as you like.


The test is for 2 hours & 45 minutes excluding the Speaking module. The Speaking module is for 15 minutes; hence the total duration is for 3 hours


  • Listening (40 questions)-30 minutes
  • Reading (40 questions)-60 minutes
  • Writing (2 essays)-60 minutes *
  • Speaking-10 to 15 minutes.
  • 1st essay (150 words) 20 minutes
  • 2nd essay (250 words) 40 minutes


  • 1st essay (150 words) 20 minutes
  • 2nd essay (250 words) 40 minutes
